2026 Volkswagen Taos or 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan: Which Volkswagen SUV Is Right for Alberta?
Choosing between the Taos and the Tiguan usually comes down to one question: how much space does your routine actually need? Both are Volkswagen SUVs built for Alberta driving, but they solve different problems for the driver behind the wheel.
The Taos is the smaller, more efficient of the two, built for drivers who want an SUV that is easy to park, easy to fuel, and easy to live with day to day. The Tiguan trades some of that efficiency for more room, more power, and more flexibility when the whole family, or a full trunk, comes along.
At 4,467 mm long, the Taos is noticeably shorter than the 4,684 mm Tiguan, a gap of more than 200 mm that shows up every time you thread through a parkade or a tight strip-mall lot. Its narrower footprint and shorter wheelbase, 2,680 mm to 2,689 mm depending on drivetrain, make it the easier vehicle to place in a compact stall.
The Tiguan's longer 2,791 mm wheelbase and larger overall size ask for more room to manoeuvre, but that same length buys the extra cabin and cargo space covered below. For a driver who splits time between city parking and highway stretches, the size difference is the first real fork in the decision.
Cabin Space and Cargo for Daily Life
The Tiguan's rear seat offers 1,021 mm of legroom, 1,414 mm of shoulder room, and 1,354 mm of hip room, inside a two-row, 5-passenger layout. Front-row space is even more generous, at 1,022 mm of legroom and 1,448 mm of shoulder room.
Cargo tells the same story. With the rear seats folded, the Tiguan opens up to 2,843 L of space, well ahead of the Taos's 1,866 L. For strollers, hockey bags, or a full grocery run, that extra room adds up fast.
The Taos still handles the basics well: daily errands, weekend gear, and the everyday clutter of commuting. Its 60/40 split-folding rear seats with a centre pass-through help when longer items need to lie flat.
Power, Drivetrain and Fuel Economy
The Taos runs a 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder making 174 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque through an 8-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard on the Trendline, with 4MOTION all-wheel drive available on every other trim.
The Tiguan starts from a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder producing 201 hp and 221 lb-ft, with 4MOTION all-wheel drive standard on every trim. The Highline Turbo R-Line raises that to 268 hp and 258 lb-ft, a jump that matters for passing power and comes with towing prep up to 1,800 lbs (817 kg).
That extra size and power come with a fuel cost. The Taos posts a combined 7.4 L/100km in front-wheel-drive form, or 8.4 L/100km with 4MOTION, while the Tiguan runs 9.2 to 9.5 L/100km combined depending on trim. Drivers logging mostly city and commuter kilometres will feel that gap over a year of fill-ups.
The Tiguan's 179 mm to 183 mm of ground clearance also gives it a bit more room over rutted pavement or gravel shoulders than a lower-riding compact, a detail drivers who cover backroads or construction-heavy routes will notice.
Tech and Convenience Across Trims
Every Taos Trendline comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen, an 8-inch Digital Cockpit, dual-zone climate control, and adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go. Moving up to Comfortline 4MOTION adds a 10.25-inch configurable Digital Cockpit Pro, six speakers, remote start, and wireless charging, with Highline adding a premium audio system, satellite navigation, and leather seating.
The Tiguan's Trendline 4MOTION starts larger, with a 12.9-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro, and six speakers built in from the base trim. The Highline Turbo R-Line tops out with a 15-inch touchscreen, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon system, a head-up display, and a 360-degree camera system, features suited to a vehicle more often loaded down with people and gear.
Which Volkswagen Fits Your Drive?
If your daily driving is a solo or two-person commute, errands, and the occasional weekend trip, the Taos does the job with less vehicle to manage and less fuel to buy. Its FWD option and compact footprint suit drivers who rarely fill every seat.
If your household regularly carries more people, more gear, or both, the Tiguan's larger cabin, bigger cargo hold, and standard 4MOTION all-wheel drive make it the right fit. Families doing school runs, road trips, or regular hauling get the room to match.
